Frequently Asked Questions
What is Aikido?
Aikido is a Japanese martial art focused on using an opponent’s energy and movement against them, rather than relying on strength. It combines throws, joint locks, and redirections in a flowing, non-aggressive style. Our classes follow the Aikikai tradition.
Do I need any experience to start?
No experience is needed. Beginners are introduced gradually to the fundamentals, and everyone trains at their own pace. Our dojo is welcoming to people of all backgrounds.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable gym clothes are perfect — ideally something you can move freely in. Once you decide to continue, you’ll need a white judo or aikido gi (uniform). We can advise on where to get one.
Is Aikido suitable for all ages and fitness levels?
Yes. Aikido emphasises technique over strength, making it accessible regardless of age or fitness. We have members ranging from teenagers to people in their 70s training together.
Is Aikido safe?
Safety is central to our training. Techniques are practised in a controlled, cooperative environment. Students learn ukemi (breakfall) skills early on so they can receive techniques safely.
What to expect on my first session?
You’ll be introduced to the basics at a pace that suits you. Expect a warm welcome, a short warm-up, some basic movement and technique practice, and time to ask questions. No pressure — just come and give it a go.
